E-Learning Used More Often Than Classroom Training

According to research done by Chief Learning Officer magazine’s Business Intelligence Board there has been a steady increase in synchronous, or instructor-led, and asynchronous or self-paced e-learning. E-learning overall has overtaken traditional classroom training. According to the previous year’s report, this shift has taken place just over the past year. All expectations are that we will continue to see e-learning usage rise yet again next year. A driving component is certainly cost, but also the affordances of e-learning in location and time flexibility and advances in technology and even Internet bandwidth.

The type of content being delivered is where we find significant variations. For example, compliance training is more often delivered through e-learning technologies and primarily through self-paced platforms than leadership development training, which is still primarily delivered as classroom-based instructor led training.

Content delivered over mobile devices has had a significant increase from 2015 to 2016.
